Encyclopedia > Samata Party

The Samata Party is a political party in India. It was led by George Fernandes. In October 2003, it announced that it will be merging with the Janata Dal (United). It was part of the ruling coalition the National Democratic Alliance.

In the 13th Lok Sabha (1999-2004), it had 12 (out of 545) members.

One minority in the party refused to go along with the merger, and maintained itself as a separate party.

GN Online: Samata Party suffers a body blow (654 words)
Samata Party, a key ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a major setback yesterday with one of its senior leaders joining the rival Congress party accusing a pro-Hindu BJP of saffronising its allies.
Dr. Shambhu Srivastava, national general secretary and spokesperson of the Samata Party was formally welcomed into the Congress party fold later in the evening by his Congress counterpart R.K. Dhawan and Ahmed Patel, political secretary to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi after he had a meeting with her.
Although Srivastava, hailing from eastern Bihar province, is not a leader with a mass base, his decision to leave the Samata Party with barely 17 months remaining for the next general elections, has come as a major embarrassment for the party.
