Biography

Little is known about Duran, except what he has said about himself. By his own account, Duran, 33, served in the Alpha Squadron of the Terran Confederacy before Arcturus Mengsk brought it down. Duran then led a small commando squad called the Confederate Resistance Forces that was dedicated to striking at Mengsk and his new Terran Dominion. Though most of his comrades regard Duran as a sly and cunning leader, few would believe the truth about his mysterious nature. Duran has a remarkable knowledge for the operations of technology of all three races in the game. He can build and maintain Protoss Pylons with moderate instabilities, has exceptional knowledge of Zerg psionics, and also has knowledge of the inner workings of the Dominion. Highly intelligent and cunning, Duran is also highly secretive and manipulative, and may possess some level of psionic powers. Artanis, a young Protoss Praetor in the StarCraft universe. ...

Special advisor for the UED

When the United Earth Directorate launched its first attack against the Terran Dominion on the world Braxis, Duran contacted the UED and offered his services to Vice Admiral Alexei Stukov and the Captain on the ground. Stukov accepted as both factions shared a common enemy in the Dominion and because Duran could prove to be a valuable asset, but he remained suspicious of Duran's motives. This was not a case that Admiral DuGalle approved at first glance, as in his eyes Duran was merely a "turncoat." Logo of the United Earth Directorate. ... Due to the information gained from Boralis, DuGalle set his sights on more important targets - such as the shipyards of Dylar IV. Duran warned DuGalle that Dominion Command could respond to any attack made on its outlying bases within 16 standard hours. DuGalle accepted the information, but scorned Duran's failure to address his rank, while Stukov was happy to accept the warning. Having captured a large number of Behemoth-class battlecruisers from drydock and defeated Dominion General Edmund Duke in space combat the UED departed for Tarsonis. On Tarsonis, the UED encountered an unknown structure which Duran identified as a Psi Disruptor. Duran immediately suggested the Psi Disruptor was such a powerful and dangerous piece of technology that it should be destroyed before Arcturus Mengsk could get his hands on it, but Vice Admiral Stukov believed its anti-Zerg abilities would greatly assist the UED in defeating the Zerg. DuGalle surprisingly agreed with Duran, ordering the Lieutenant to personally see to the destruction of the device. Upon expertly removing the threat from renegade Zerg in the area Duran suddenly was relieved by Ghost agents with orders from Stukov to dismantle the Psi Disruptor. Treason

The UED invaded Korhal IV and rapidly defeated the Dominion defenses, but Mengsk escaped to Aiur with the assistance of Jim Raynor and a small Protoss fleet. Upon tracking them to the devastated Protoss homeworld the UED launched tactical ground assaults around and against the Protoss base containing the fugitives. Whilst the Captain's troops were successful in breaching the Protoss defenses and destroying Raynor's command center, a large Zerg force moved in through Duran's support position to the north east of the main battle. Duran had moved his forces out of position, allowing the Zerg free access to attack the primary UED operation. Stukov immediately ordered Duran to get back into position but Duran claimed his sensors were not detecting any Zerg, suggesting there was a problem with Stukov's equipment. Then he claimed his communications equipment was malfunctioning and abruptly cut off the transmission. As a result the Zerg broke through both the UED and the Protoss lines, creating enough interference to allow Mengsk and Raynor to escape through a nearby Warp Gate. Stukov told the Captain he had personal business he had to attend to and left. He didn't explain his actions to either the Captain or DuGalle.

Tracking him to Braxis, DuGalle and Duran became aware of a new development: the Psi Disruptor had been reconstructed and reactivated on the surface. Duran made the case to DuGalle that Stukov had betrayed him by reconstructing the Disruptor in order to sabotage DuGalle's mission in the Koprulu Sector. Unwillingly accepting the evidence, the Admiral gave Duran authority to enter the Disruptor and kill Stukov. Duran led a squad of UED marines into the base, defeating Stukov's contingent of troops. Upon locating the Vice-Admiral, Duran stated his intentions to terminate the renegade officer. Stukov replied, "We both know what you are here to terminate." Duran quickly shot Stukov, cloaked and disappeared further into the Disruptor. Stukov contacted DuGalle, telling him that Duran was a traitor working for the Zerg attempting to sabotage the UED's mission by destroying the Psi Disruptor and was probably even infested. As Stukov drew his last breaths, the Psi Disruptor's self-destruct activated, proving Stukov right as Zerg also pour into the structure. A vengeful DuGalle ordered the computer to find Duran, but it couldn't. Duran's forces, allying again with Stukov's remaining troops, successfully defeated the Zerg and deactivated the self-destruct.

Right hand to the Queen of Blades

The remaining UED forces launched an assault on the Overmind on Char using the Psi Disruptor to their full advantage. Upon capturing the creature, Samir Duran made an appearance nearby, emerging from the transport of an Overlord. He introduced DuGalle to Kerrigan, who stated that the Zerg and Duran belong to her and that the Psi Disruptor won't protect DuGalle for long. She and Duran quickly departed. Duran acts as Kerrigan's right-hand man during Episode VI. His infested status is known to Kerrigan's new allies, Fenix and Jim Raynor. The alliance, which grows to include exiled Terran Dominion emperor Arcturus Mengsk, raid the world of Moria and launch a daring plan to defeat the United Earth Directorate forces on Korhal. They are successful in doing so, but Kerrigan and Duran planned to attack their recent allies - Duran's tactical knowledge proves critical in Kerrigan's success as he knew how long it would take Duke and Fenix's forces to respond to a threat after their recent battle against the UED. Duran's insidious plans enabled Kerrigan to capture the Dark Templar Matriarch Raszagal from her citadel on Shakuras. His knowledge of Protoss technology was extremely useful as well, enabling him to use the Protoss' defenses against them. Duran set up an explosive chain reaction in the citadel pylons, destroying the outpost of Telematros and allowing Kerrigan capture the Matriarch during the ensuring confusion. However, Kerrigan had not seen fit to tell him the reasons for this assault, which presented a large danger due to the presence of the Xel'Naga Temple. She and Duran traveled to Char, intending to face the enslaved Zerg Overmind and the UED troops guarding it. Duran pointed out that only Dark Templar could slay the new Overmind, but Kerrigan enjoyed seeing him unable to figure out her plans - that was when Zeratul appeared. Kerrigan managed to establish some kind of hold over Raszagal's mind and used her as leverage to blackmail Zeratul into killing the new Overmind. However, Zeratul rescued Raszagal from the Zerg immediately after the death of the Overmind and prepared to return to Shakuras via Recall. Again, Duran's knowledge of Protoss technology proved vital in Zerg success: Kerrigan's forces were able to attack the Protoss and retrieve Raszagal before they could escape. The mystery deepens

During the final stages of Episode VI, Kerrigan loses all her psionic links with Duran for no explained reason. Meanwhile, fleeing from Kerrigan's forces on Char, Zeratul discovers that Duran is secretly (and under orders from an unknown authority) breeding a Protoss/Zerg Hybrid on a dark moon. This seems to be a completion of the first Overmind's goal of merging the Protoss and Zerg, who stated that this would make the swarm truly powerful. This is however unlikely as Duran appeared to have been playing everyone, since his introduction early in chapter V. As he was the one who suggested that they should destroy the Psi Disrupter, a weapon that would disable the driving will of the Zerg rendering them nullified. It is possible that the Zerg are a partial completion of a predetermined species, an ellusive Xel'Naga experiment that the first Overmind shared through its creators. From the manner in which Duran replies to Zeratul (with a completely inhuman voice), and his claim to be many millennia old and to have been known by many names in the past, Duran's background becomes even more enigmatic. He further asserts that he is serving a "far greater power" but this has been left open to interpretation, though some believe it the Xel'Naga. Char is a planet in the StarCraft universe. ... Game unit

Duran, represented by a Terran Ghost unit, generally wears a white muscle shirt, blue pants, and a beret. He also carries a powerful C-10 Canister Rifle. As a hero, Duran's weapon is imbued with power 3 times that of a normal Ghost and he is not at all representative of the Ghost as a unit.

Duran becomes represented in-game by a new unit called Infested Duran by Episode VI. He has even more hit points and a carapace (although it's not very obvious). Duran still uses a canister rifle however, and the method by which his consume ability functions is obviously a technological device as it makes a "high-tech sound" when he consumes a Zerg, somehow feeding its biological energy into the device. Duran's voice changes somewhat, coming more in line with that of Kerrigan and other infested Terrans. He is also shown in the unit window as a color-coded Wireframe identical to his previous form, making him the only Zerg unit represented as such. Curiously, Infested Duran is the only unit to be upgraded with weapon and armor upgrades from separate factions: Zerg Carapace upgrades will improve Duran's armor, but it is Terran Infantry Weapon upgrades that improve the power of his weaponry. This makes him one of the three unique units in the game (the other two being Tassadar, the only High Templar with a physical attack, and Infested Kerrigan, a completely new unit).

If either version of Duran's in game unit is clicked enough time, he will quote the 80's band Duran Duran, paying tribute to one of its hits, Is There Something I Should Know?
