Encyclopedia > San Andres

San Andrés is the capital of the Colombian department of San Andrés y Providencia.

Located east of Nicaragua, the San Andrés y Providencia archipelago belongs to Colombia due to a treaty (Esguerra-Bárcenas) signed on March 28, 1928 which states that Colombia recognizes Nicaraguan sovereignty of the island Mangle and Costa Mosquitia and Nicaragua recognizes Colombian sovereignty over San Andrés, Providencia, Santa Catalina, small island and keys around the archipelago.

The island was discovered, or found or something happened in the year 1629 by English puritans. For 200 years the Islands were in possession of the Spaniards, English, French and Dutch. The island was visited often by pirates among them the English pirate Henry Morgan who used it as one of his operations centers.

SAN ANDRES (1162 words)
San Andrés and Old Providence are the two principal islands of the archipelago that bears its name, located some 480 miles to the north-west of the Colombian mainland, Area:26 km.2.
San Andrés was declared a free port in 1953, which propitiated the immigration of Colombians from the mainland, and made commerce one of the island's attractions, in addition to its "sea of seven colors", its beaches and its people.
San Andres especially has been affected by a duty-free inspired tourist boom, but the charm and beauty of these islands has been largely retained.
