History The Ramapage's story goes back as far as 2000 when the ground was broken for the SBC Center right next door to the Freeman Coliseum, which was occupied by the Central Hockey League's San Antonio Iguanas. The building was built primarily for the Spurs, however the team also envisioned bringing a hockey team into the building. Unfortunately, a falling out between the Spurs and the Iguanas forced the Spurs to look elsewhere for hockey. Originally partnering up with the Florida Panthers, the Spurs successfully brought the AHL to San Antonio. The Iguanas, unable to compete and unable to find a suitable home after their lease at the Coliseum expired, folded. The team was initially unveiled as the "Stampede" with the current logo sporting "STAMPEDE" in place of "RAMPAGE". The decision was made a few days later to switch to "Rampage". San Antonio Freeman Coliseum, built in 1950, has been host to thousands of events varying from three-ring circus acts to concerts and boxing events. ...
