San Miguel is a census-designated place located in San Luis Obispo County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,427.

San Miguel is located at 35°45'5" North, 120°41'43" West (35.751313, -120.695413)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.3 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,427 people, 468 households, and 335 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 329.9/km² (852.3/mi²). There are 503 housing units at an average density of 116.3/km² (300.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 63.28% White, 1.47% African American, 2.73% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 23.83% from other races, and 8.27% from two or more races. 32.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 468 households out of which 46.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% are non-families. 20.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.53.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 33.0% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.3 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $33,264, and the median income for a family is $32,847. Males have a median income of $26,216 versus $20,134 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $15,444. 10.2% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.5% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
