The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (commonly known as Sandhurst) is the British Armyofficer training centre. The academy is prestigious and has had many famous alumni including Sir Winston Churchill. The academy lies within the Bracknell Forest district in the former county of Berkshire, but the nearest town is Camberley in Surrey.
All British Army officers, and many from elsewhere in the world, are trained at Sandhurst.
The commissioning course, lasting 44 weeks, must be passed by most British regular army officers before they receive their commission. It is usually preceded by the Regular Commissioning Board and followed by a further training course specific to the Corps the officer will serve in. Shorter commissioning courses are run for "professionally qualified officers" (eg, doctors, dentists, chaplains) and Territorial Army officers.
Sandhurst also runs a variety of courses for officers, and has strong academic departments.
Sandhurst is known nationwide as the location of the Royal MilitaryAcademySandhurst (often referred to simply as "Sandhurst," "The Academy" or "The RMA").
Sandhurst is bordered, on the south, by the River Blackwater, and several of the Yateley Lakes along its course are within the parish, notably Trilakes with its country park.
Sandhurst lies just off the A30, is close to junction 4 of the M3 motorway (3.4 miles) and within easy reach of the M4 (10.3 miles) via the Crowthorne bypass (A3095) to Bracknell and the A329(M) towards Reading.
The Royal MilitaryAcademySandhurst (RMAS), commonly known simply as Sandhurst, is the British Army officer initial training centre.
The Academy straddles the border between the counties of Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey, marked by a small stream known as the Wish Stream, after which the Academy journal is named.
RMA Sandhurst was formed in 1947, from the Royal MilitaryAcademy in Woolwich (which trained officers for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers from 1741 to 1939) and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.
