Sandra Zaiter, born in Dominican Republic, is a well known children's figure in Puerto Rico. She started her career by hosting a show on Chanel 7 Rikavisión. Zaiter was also a renowned singer,composer, diver and swimmer, until she suffered a life threatening accident in the 1970s, when she hit her head against a rock in a dive in a beach in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The accident left her paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. In 1976 she won the national OTI Festival as a composer. The 1970s decade refers to the years from 1970 to 1979. ... Even after her life changing accident, however, she continued hosting her children's shows with more energy than ever. During the later part of the 1970s, Zaiter's fame rose, as she went on to record many well selling children's albums and to have a daily television show on WRIK / WLUZ. She currently has a program on TUTV WIPR-TV called "Contra viento y Marea" (Against Wind and Sea). It is a program whose purpose is to give guidance and assistance to the handicapped. She does public appearances, especially in the yearly presentation of the Sandra Zaiter Award to those who have distinguished themselves helping the handicapped. One of Telemundo's studios is named after her. WKAQ-TV is a full-power television station located in San Juan, Puerto Rico transmitting over analog channel 2, digital 28. ... Sandra is the speaker for the MDA in Puerto Rico and an important sponsor of the association's telemarathon there. Zaiter is viewed by many Puerto Ricans as a hero. Angela Meyer wrote a mini-seires titled Gaviota de la Esperanza based on the life of Zaiter.
