Sanford is a census-designated place located in York County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 20,806.


Geography

Sanford is located at 43°26'23" North, 70°46'23" West (43.439925, -70.773304)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 126.2 km˛ (48.7 mi˛). 123.8 km˛ (47.8 mi˛) of it is land and 2.4 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.89% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,806 people, 8,270 households, and 5,449 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 168.1/km˛ (435.3/mi˛). There are 8,807 housing units at an average density of 71.1/km˛ (184.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.68% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,270 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 27.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.0 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $34,668, and the median income for a family is $43,021. Males have a median income of $33,115 versus $24,264 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,951. 12.8% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
