Encyclopedia > Sans Souci

Sans Souci was the palacial residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia 1740 - 1786. The name derives from the French, literally, "without care.". He lived and kept his court here for some forty years, having completed construction in 1747, in Potsdam. The audience chamber with its numerous fine paintings, the extensive library, beautiful gardens, the great fountain, and of course the statue of Frederick the Great make the site especially remarkable.
