Santa Cruz da Graciosa is both a municipality and a parish in the Northern part of the Azores.
The population of the municipality is 4,780 (2001) and the area is 60.94km². It is divided into 4 parishes, and includes the entire island of Graciosa, which is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.
The area has three or four mountain ranges.
The parish population in 2001 is 1,838, its density is 115/km² and the area is 15.98 km². The parish was founded in the northern part of the island.
In 1829, in Vila daPraia, the liberals won over the absolutists, making Terceira Island, the main headquarters of the new Portuguese regime, and where the Counsil of Regency (Conselho de Regência) of Mary II of Portugal was established.
Ponta Delgada consisted of São Miguel and Santa Maria, with the capital at Ponta Delgada on São Miguel.
Santa Maria Island is the oldest Azorean island presenting several limestone and red clay extensions.
