History

The povoation initiated with a donation of sesmarias by Marques de Alegrete. Founded in 30 of july in 1823, it was considered a city on 1857, when it ws emancipated from Alegrete.

Economy

Based on comerce, agriculture, pecuary and wineyards. Main wineyards are from the Almaden wines and Santa Colina wines.

With the neighbouring uruguayen city of Rivera, it consitutes a binacional conurbation, nominated the Frontier of Peace.
