Saratoga Springs is a city located in Saratoga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,186.


Saratoga Springs is the home of Skidmore College; Saratoga Race Course; the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (summer home of the renowned New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra); 11 musea; Saratoga Polo; Saratoga Equine Sports Center; and over 20 golf courses.


Noted personalities born in Saratoga Springs include writer Frank Sullivan and actor David Hyde Pierce. It is the home of author and social critic James Howard Kunstler

Geography

Saratoga Springs is located at 43°4'31" North, 73°46'57" West (43.075337, -73.782422)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 75.3 km˛ (29.1 mi˛). 73.6 km˛ (28.4 mi˛) of it is land and 1.6 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.17% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 26,186 people, 10,784 households, and 5,985 families residing in the city. The population density is 355.6/km˛ (921.1/mi˛). There are 11,584 housing units at an average density of 157.3/km˛ (407.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 93.53% White, 3.11% African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 1.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 10,784 households out of which 25.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.5% are non-families. 35.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.88.


In the city the population is spread out with 19.4% under the age of 18, 15.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $45,130, and the median income for a family is $59,281. Males have a median income of $39,573 versus $29,439 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,250. 8.8% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
