After playing at New York University as a stand out collegian he spent all of his 13 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Boston Celtics, being part of eight championship teams in 1961-66, 1968 and 1969. In NBA history, only teammates Bill Russell and Sam Jones have won more championship rings during their playing careers. He ended his career in 1973. He coached the team for a brief period in 1978. He worked at Harvard, and later the NBA for many years, and retired in 2006. He currently lives with his 2nd wife Virginia Sanders in western Massachusetts. Sanders, who is the first fl to become a head coach at Harvard and the first fl to coach basketball in the Ivy League, was not even considered a serious candidate for the post until two weeks before his selection.
Sanders said that the Harvard job had been mentioned to him several times during the Celtics' season, but it was not until the season ended that he became seriously interested in the job.
Sanders, at least from his early statements about Harvard, seems to realize that basketball is only one part of the whole of undergraduate life, not the whole in itself.
