Kon attended Musashino College of the Arts and originally planned to be a painter. Shortly after leaving school, he became closely associated with Katsuhiro Otomo and collaborated with the author on the manga World Apartment Horror. Kon entered the anime industry by working as set designer for Roujin Z (1991), for which Otomo was the screenwriter and mechanichal designer. Kon's early work was strongly influenced by Otomo. Other early projects include Run Melos! (1992), and Mamoru Oshii's Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993). After collaborating with Oshii on a short-run manga series titled Seraphim: 266613336 Wings he then wrote the screenplays for Koji Morimoto's "Magnetic Rose" segment of Memories (1996) and episode 5 of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA. His directoral debut was Perfect Blue , (1997). His most recent project was a television series titled Paranoia Agent (2004). Throughout its thirteen episodes, the series examined the human psyche, and issues of personal and cultural identity, with a subtext of social commentary on post-war Japanese culture. He is currently developing a feature-length film with an undetermined release date. Kon themes often blur fantasy and reality, and his films deal with subject matter not usually found in animation. Satoshi Kon (今敏 Kon Satoshi, born 12 October 1963 in Kushiro,Hokkaido,Japan) is a highly-regarded director of anime films Perfect Blue (1997), Millennium Actress (2001) and Tokyo Godfathers(2003).
Unlike Kon's previous two films, Tokyo Godfathers seems disinterested in any issues more unwieldy than the tidy resolution of each of its subplots--in healing the wounds of its characters and their pasts in ways of which the protagonists and antagonists of Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress are largely incapable.
Kon, an unattractive man who appears to be married, confesses he surrounds himself with people and drinks a lot, while Okamoto, an extremely attractive actress (this is her first voice work), confesses that she works all day then sits at home at night, completely alone and staring at the floor.
