The primary and engineering hulls of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C).
The primary and engineering hulls of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C).

In the Star Trek fictional universe, traditional Federation starship design divided Starfleet ships into with two main sections: the "primary hull", which provides crew quarters and living facilities, science and mission facilities. The "primary hull" also has weapons arrays, impulse engines, and command facilities such as the main bridge. The "primary hull" is also known as the "saucer section" due to its resemblance to a saucer. The second part of the ship, the "engineering hull", is attached to the "primary hull" by a neck. The "engineering hull" is also known as the "stardrive section", or the "battle section." The "stardrive section" holds all warp drive-related components, as well as the navigational deflector array, shield generator and additional weapons. The "stardrive section" could also contain fuel storage, cargo bays, shuttle bays and other systems. In some cases the "saucer section" can detach from the "stardrive section" in the event of a warpdrive overload. This distiction has become less clear in most 24th century Starfleet ships. This is most clearly illustrated by the USS Defiant. The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C), an Ambassador-class starship This work is copyrighted. ... Saucer separation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (982 words)
In the Star Trek fictional universe, saucer separation is used to describe the procedure whereby the saucer section of certain Starfleet starship types disengages from the stardrive section.
In early drafts of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the USS Enterprise was to separate its saucer section while confronting V'ger, and the separation line indicated in concept art is clearly visible on the connecting dorsal of the finished model, but this scene was scrapped.
Carrying all the non-essential personnel, the saucer section could depart the battle area; meanwhile, the stardrive section (controlled from the battle bridge, an auxiliary command centre in the stardrive section) could engage the enemy with a minimal complement.
Primary hull - Memory Alpha - A Wikia wiki (364 words)
The primary hull (also known as the saucer section or saucer module on some classes) is a major component of the overall hull structure.
Ships capable of saucer separation were designed for this purpose in order to have the primary hull serve as a lifeboat for the crew in the event of catastrophic damage to the warp core or a loss of antimatter containment.
Saucer sections on some starships, like the Galaxy class, are even equipped to make planetfall and landing, although not all are designed to return to space following a landing.
