Meaning of the name

The city draws its name from the nearby rapids, originally named Les Saults de Sainte-Marie. Sault is an archaic French word for "waterfall" or "rapids".


In modern French, the words chutes and rapides are now used to convey those two meanings, and sault survives almost exclusively in geographic names dating from the 17th century.
