Port Egmont on the island was the site of the first British settlement, established in 1765. When the British withdrew in 1775, they placed a plaque at the site proclaiming their sovereignty over the Falklands. The island's present settlement lies on the east coast and has an airstrip.
Wildlife on the island includes rockhopper, gentoo, Magellanic and king penguins, black-browed albatrosses and many other birds.
The FalklandIslands is an archipelago in the South Atlantic continental shelf consisting of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, and a number of smaller islands.
The FalklandIslands are a largely self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom but are claimed by Argentina to be part of its national territory.
The extra-provincial Anglican parish of the FalklandIslands is under the direct jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
