Santiago was a popular figure on campus while a student at the University of Miami; many remember her as a bubbly and perky part-time waitress at the campus pub, The Rathskeller (affectionately known in the UM community as "The Rat").
Santiago's breakthrough role was in a performance of Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge on Broadway, and she would go on to star in Marvin Hamlisch's musical Smile as well as seminal hip hop movie Beat Street.
