Encyclopedia > Sauveterrian

The Sauveterrian is the name for an archaeological culture of the European Mesolithic which flourished around 7000-8000 years BC. The name is derived from the type site of Sauveterre le Lémance in the French departement of Lot et Garonne

It was focused on Southern France and surrounding areas. Characteristic artefacts include geometric microliths and backed points on micro-blades. Wood working tools are notably missing from Sauveterrian assemblages. There is evidence for ritual burial.

Digging was concentrated in the area of the foresaid mound of stones under which a burial dated to the late Sauveterrian (early Mesolithic) was brought to light.
The burial was formed by a shallow grave, oriented east-west; the eastern and western walls were slightly inclined, whereas the northern and southern ones were almost vertical.
Although the results of the radiometric analyses have yet to be finalised, its chronology may be established by the lithic typology.
