A "Save the Date" item is an item stating the date of a wedding which is mailed out to people when you know the wedding date and you want them to be able to attend. Usually it is a card, but can also be a magnet or other clever items. It comes out before the wedding invitation is finalized. It is meant for someone with a long engagement and arrives at least 6 months before the wedding. This way, people can ask for time off work, start to make travel arrangements, etc. Even if you do not mail every guest a Save the Date item, consider sending to those with the farthest to travel, as they will most likely have to budget the travel expenses.
