Savusavu is a town in Fiji on the island of Vanua Levu with a population of about 6,000. It was originally established as a trading center for sandalwood, beche-de-mer and copra. It has been called "The Hidden Paradise" of Fiji, but is quickly becoming a tourist attraction owing to its diving and yachting facilities. Vanua Levu is the second largest island of Fiji, and was formerly known as Sandalwood Island. ... Savusavu is located 100 miles north-east of Suva, on Vanua Levu the second largest island in the Fiji Group.
Founded before the signing of the Deed of Cession, Savusavu township on the shores of a large picturesque, deep water harbor was originally established as a center with the sailing ships plying the coastline for cargoes of sandalwood and beche-de-mer; later it became the center of the cotton boom.
Savusavu's economy now relies on copra and the township serves an area that constitutes the major coconut producing area of Fiji.
