Saxon is a British heavy metal band, formed in 1976 in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
Dawson has claimed that the character of Derek Smalls from the spoof-metal band Spinal Tap was strongly influenced by him, particularly his prominent facial hair and his penchant for playing to the gallery by fingering his bass with his left hand while throwing a mano cornuto with his right.
Saxon is currently embarking on the "25th Anniversary of NWOBHM" tour of Germany beginning in early March 2005.

Saxon are set to release their first studio album for three years, 'Lionheart', on CD and limited edition 'digipak' - including an exclusive patch - on SPV on September 20th, prior to four major UK concerts in October.
Saxon were originally known as Son Of A Bitch and spent their early days paying dues in clubs and small venues up and down the UK, building a strong live reputation.
Saxon's reputation as an excellent live act was further augmented by the release of their 1996 live cut 'The Eagle Has Landed II' and interest in the group began to pick up again in Britain.
