Encyclopedia > Scan line

A scan line is one line, or row, in a raster scanning pattern, such as a video line on a Cathode ray tube (CRT) display of a television or computer. A scan line represents a row of picture elements (pixels) in the image being displayed. Raster can refer to either of the following items: Raster graphics, Bit array, the general-purpose data structure, or The scanning pattern of the electron beam to a screen of a Cathode Ray Tube. ... In video, lines are a measurement of display resolution or image resolution. ... Cathode ray tube employing electromagnetic focus and deflection Cutaway rendering of a color CRT: 1. ... This example shows an image with a portion greatly enlarged, in which the individual pixels are rendered as little squares and can easily be seen. ...

The term is used, by analogy, for the representation of a single row in raster data. Scan lines are important in representations of image data, because many image file formats have special rules for data at the end of a scan line. For example, there may be a rule that each scan line starts on a particular boundary (such as byte or even byte). This means that even otherwise compatible raster data may need to be analysed at the level of scan lines in order to convert between formats. Suppose the smiley face in the top left corner is an RGB bitmap image. ...

This is one of the reasons I scan in line art in line art mode, as it is far easier and more effective to clean up the 'dirt' assuming you have a fairly clean piece of paper to begin with.
Test the line art by printing at 100% to a good quality laser printer or other device to see what the output may be like, and to see if any further adjustments need to be made, or if you need to rescan.
