Popularized as "Gothenburg metal" and pioneered by the likes of In Flames and Opeth, its kid-friendly sound quickly caught on with people who had previously avoided death metal. "Scandinavian death metal" had taken on a whole new meaning in the mainstream mind, and needless to say, a lot of people were pissed.
