Schererville is a town located in Lake County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 24,851.


Geography

Schererville is located at 41°29'21" North, 87°26'35" West (41.489135, -87.443137)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.3 km˛ (13.6 mi˛). 35.2 km˛ (13.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,851 people, 9,660 households, and 6,829 families residing in the town. The population density is 705.0/km˛ (1,825.9/mi˛). There are 10,006 housing units at an average density of 283.9/km˛ (735.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 91.45% White, 2.14% African American, 0.11% Native American, 2.56% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.03% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 6.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 9,660 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $59,243, and the median income for a family is $70,474. Males have a median income of $50,732 versus $30,745 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,528. 3.1% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.9% of those under the age of 18 and 2.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Schererville is a town in Lake County, Indiana, United States.
Long before Indiana became a state, long before the founding of Schererville, people called this place the "Crossroads." The name was appropriate, for several Indian trails that later became routes for the wagons of settlers traveling west intersected here.

Because of the convergence of Indian trails, railroads, and major highways in the Schererville area, the town adopted the slogan “Crossroads of the Nation.” Many Indian (mostly Potawatomi) trails in Schererville con- nected with the Sauk Trail, the major east-west thoroughfare between Indiana and Illinois.
In 1866 Nicholas Scherer platted the Town of Schererville on 40 acres of land, purchased from the swampland mogul Aaron N. Hart.
Like its neighbors to the east and south, Schererville experienced explosive residential and commercial growth in the latter half of the twentieth century.
