Background
Scholomance is located on the island of Caer Darrow in Darrowmere Lake, in the Western Plaguelands. This is a list of the major and minor Locations ordered by region (after the events of Third Great War) in the Warcraft universe â a fictional universe in which a series of video games and books are set. ...
The human fortification on Caer Darrow dates back to the days of the empire of Arathor. Several years prior to the coming of the Scourge, the owners of the island were the Barov family of Alterac. Caer Darrow represented just one part of their vast holdings, which also included Brill, Southshore, and Tarren Mill. Not content with their enormous wealth, the Barovs entered into a deal with the human mage Kel'Thuzad, leader of the Cult of the Damned. In exchange for de facto ownership of Caer Darrow, the Barovs were granted immortality through undeath. The once opulent House of Barov became the horrific Scholomance, a school of necromancy.
Nomenclature While geographical short forms are highly varied in any MMORPG, the most common shortform referring to Scholomance is "Scholo". Also, an ongoing debate on the Blizzard forums is the proper pronunciation of the instance but it was revealed by many official posters including Eyonix and Caydiem as being properly prounced as "SKOH-loh-mance." Current Residents Scholomance is ruled by the Lich Ras Frostwhisper in the name of the Scourge, while the mortal necromancer Gandling serves as headmaster. Three of the undead Barovs remain: Lord Alexei Barov, Lady Illucia Barov, and Jandice Barov. Other notable inhabitants include the Kirtonos the Herald, Rattlegore, Deathknight Darkreaver, Vectus, Marduk Blackpool, Instructor Malicia, the Ravenian, Doctor Theolen Krastinov ("the Butcher"), and Lorekeeper Polkelt. The school is populated by various forms of undead, including skeletons, ghouls, zombies, and ghosts, as well as humanoid necromancers and other magic users. Gameplay The instance is designed for players at or very close to the level cap of 60, as monster levels range from 58 to 61 with Ras Frostwhisper and Darkmaster Gandling being 62. Nearly every monster is elite. The vast number of named boss monsters results in decent treasure for victorious parties. In addition, the alchemy laboratory of Ras Frostwhisper is one of two places in the game where flasks can be created. Flasks are the most powerful potions in the game. One of the primary bosses of Scholomance, Darkmaster Gandling, drops the head piece of every class' blue, superior armor set making Scholomance runs popular. Most of the items found in this instance are regarded as being sub-standard, though, and there is little reason to visit the instance unless you're trying to complete your blue set. Scholomance houses several green-quality armor sets of its own, most likely intended as stepping-stones to later armor sets. (These include the Deathbone Guardian, Necropile Regalia, etc.) Scholomance has been the target of many "nerfs" since its release. That is, Blizzard has lessened the difficulty of the zone substantially since its first opening. Originally, Scholomance was one of the most difficult areas of the game due to the densely packed monsters and multiple roaming patrols that could easily spell doom for unwary parties. Unfortunately the rewards from the area did not match the difficulty, and instead of improving them, Blizzard opted to make the entire instance easier by spreading out groups, lessening the amount of monsters that attack at a given time, and greatly lengthening respawn rates of monsters you've already killed. A nerf is a change to the rules of a computer game that weakens a certain object(s). ...
Another thing worth noting is that every monster inside both Scholomance and the undead of Stratholme have a chance to drop "Scourgestones" and also give reputation with the Neutral faction, The Argent Dawn. There are 3 Varietys of Scourgestone. - Minion's Scourgestone These are the most common Scourgestone of the lot. Drops off nearly all Non-Elite Undead above level 50. You need 20 to turn them in. - Invader's Scourgestone These are the second most common Scourgestone. Drops off all Elite undead inside Scholomance and Stratholme. You need to 10 to turn them in - Corruptor's Scourgestone These are the Rarest of all Scourgestones. These drop off Undead bosses. Each boss only drops one however, and it must be rolled for. You only need one to turn it in.
