The University of Chicago School mathematics Project (UCSMP) was initiated in 1983, when the Amoco Corporation awarded a grant to the mathematics and education departments for the development of programs to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning in the United States.
Among UCSMP's early accomplishments were (1) an examination of international mathematics curricula, (2) the writing of elementary and secondary textbooks, (3) the formation of training programs for teachers, and (4) in-house evaluation of the project's programs during both their development and their implementation in "actual use" situations (Usiskin, 2000).
In 1999, Project 2061, a long-term mathematics and science reform initiative of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), evaluated twelve algebra textbooks in a rigorous academic analysis by teams of professional educators including classroom teachers and university researchers.
