A schrader valve on a bicycle tire.
A schrader valve on a bicycle tire.

The Schrader Valve was invented by August Schrader and is used on all automobile tires and lower pressure bicycle tires. Higher pressure bicycle tires use the Presta valve. Schrader valves are also used on the fuel rail of some direct fuel injection engines and on some automotive air conditioning systems to allow recharging with Freon. Like the Presta valve, it uses air pressure inside the tire to keep the valve shut, but it adds a spring to assist in keeping the valve shut (especially important as the pressure decreases). That it is also bigger in diameter than the Presta valve makes it ideal for higher quantities of air at lower pressures, while the Presta valve is suited more to lower amounts of air at higher pressures. Carl Larsson, VÃ¥ren, 1907 Spring is one of the four seasons of temperate zones. ...

Schrader valve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (673 words)
The Schrader Valve is a valve stem invented by August Schrader and is used on virtually all automobile tires and lower pressure bicycle tires.
It is a poppet valve assisted by a spring.
Schrader valves are also used on the fuel rail of some direct fuel injection engines and on some automotive air conditioning systems, in a diameter larger than those used on tires, to allow recharging with refrigerant.
Presta and Schrader Valves (892 words)
The Schrader valve stem is recessed, lacks the locking nut and normally uses a spring to help keep it closed.
There is a common misconception that Presta valves are better for the higher pressures used in high performance bicycle tires, but Schrader valves are used in many high pressure industrial applications, as well as high pressure bicycle suspension systems.
In the photo to the left are two different types of Schrader valve cores, a "long" core which has a relatively large exposed spring, and a "short" one with an internal spring that isn't visible.
