Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,143 km˛ (441 mi˛). 1,133 km˛ (437 mi˛) of it is land and 11 km˛ (4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,189 people, 2,975 households, and 2,070 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). There are 3,304 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.80% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,975 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.70% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.87. In the county the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 19.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.60 males.
