Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,143 km˛ (441 mi˛). 1,133 km˛ (437 mi˛) of it is land and 11 km˛ (4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,189 people, 2,975 households, and 2,070 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). There are 3,304 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.80% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,975 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.70% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.87.
