Schweriner See is a lake in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, located at 53°37′59″N, 11°27′56″E. Its surface is approximately 64 km² and its maximum depth is 52.4 metres. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (German: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) is a Bundesland (federal state) in northern Germany. ...

Neighboring districts are (from east clockwise) Bad Doberan, Güstrow, Parchim, the district-free city Schwerin, the district Ludwigslust, and the district Lauenburg and the district-free city Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein.
The district is roughly situated in a triangle between the towns of Lübeck, Wismar and Schwerin.
In the north there is the coast of the Baltic Sea with the small island of Poel; two large lakes are partially situated in Nordwestmecklenburg: the eastern half of the Schaalsee (23 km²) at the western border; and the northern half of the Schweriner See (63 km²) in the south.

In 1160 Henry the Lion defeated the Obotrites and captured Schwerin.
Between 1765 and 1837 the town of Ludwigslust was the capital, before the status of Schwerin was reestablished at last.
The landmark of the city is the Schwerin Castle, located on an island in the lake of the same name (Schweriner See).
