All ScienceDirect deals, however, discourage libraries from dropping titles, and they often limit librarians' ability to publicly discuss the terms of their contracts.
Metz, of Virginia Tech, also says that one of the benefits of rejecting another big ScienceDirect deal is the prospect of having greater freedom to drop titles that aren't well used by scholars, and using the savings to purchase non-Elsevier titles.
The ScienceDirect service is a Web database for scientific research that contains the full text of more than 1,000 Elsevier Science journals in the life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences available through the Internet.
The journals in ScienceDirect are arranged under convenient subject areas for topical navigation.
Another advantage of ScienceDirect is the ability to carry out cross-journal keyword searches (ie: search all journals or those in a particular subject area).
