Encyclopedia > Scimitar (Star Trek)

The Reman Warbird Scimitar was a very powerful starship in the Star Trek universe that appeared in Star Trek: Nemesis. In the fictional Star Trek universe, Remans are natives of the planet Remus. ... This article is about the vehicle for interstellar travel. ... Star Trek Nemesis (Paramount Pictures, 2002; see also 2002 in film) is the tenth feature film based on the popular Star Trek science fiction television series. ...

The Scimitar had a superficial similarity in design to the Klingon Bird of Prey but was actually closer to the design of a Dominion battleship. This has been noted in the Romulan ship category of Ex-Astris-Scientia.org and can been observed in the picture files at BridgeCommander.filefront.com. The ships design was probably the result of observed data and information gained about these ships by Shinzon during his service for the Romulans during the Dominion war. It was constructed at a secret base on Remus, to be the personal flagship of Shinzon. It was used as the secret flagship base of his army that invaded Romulus to liberate the Remans from Romulan oppression, because it was one of the most heavily armed starships of the era. It carried 52 disruptor banks and 27 photon torpedo bays, and had primary and secondary shields. The greatest asset was the cloaking device. Not only could the Scimitar fire while the cloaking device was engaged, but it didn't give off tachyon emissions or residual antiprotons, like other Klingon or Romulan cloaking devices do, making it completely undetectable. In several science fiction universes, a cloaking device is an advanced stealth system which causes a spaceship or individual to be invisible and extremely difficult to detect with normal sensors. ... A tachyon (from the Greek ταχύς takhús, meaning swift) is any hypothetical particle that travels at superluminal velocity. ... The antiproton (aka pbar) is the antiparticle of the proton. ...

Aside from the cloaking device, the most important (and horrific) device was the thalaron radiation weapon. The Scimitar itself was designed to produce large amounts of the deadly radiation, enough to eradicate all life on a planet. Thalaron radiation is a type of deadly radiation in the fictional Star Trek Universe. ...

Shinzon intended to use the Scimitar to destroy Earth as the prelude to a Romulan invasion. It engaged the Enterprise-E in the Bassen Rift and although the Enterprise had help from two Romulan Warbirds, disabled its cloaking device, exhausted all of its torpedoes and almost all of its Phaser energy, rammed it, and disabled most of its primary conventional weapons systems, the Scimitar still remained mostly operational. A dying Shinzon ordered the deployment of the thalaron weapon, which would kill everyone on the Enterprise. Just before it would fire, Lt. Commander Data discharged his phaser into the thalaron activation matrix and destroyed the ship. The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) is a Sovereign class starship in the Star Trek fictional universe. ... Data, played by Brent Spiner, is a character in the Star Trek fictional universe. ...

Despite its eventual destruction, the Scimitar may well be, overall, the most powerful and deadly ship ever featured in Star Trek. Only the massive Borg Cube can challenge this title. A Borg cube ship over Earth In the Star Trek fictional universe, the Borg cube ship is a variety of immense, cubic starship that functions as part of the Borg Collective. ...

Star Trek is first and foremost a vehicle for entertainment, and the primary aim of the writers is to deliver drama, not science.
Many of the technologies "created" for the Star Trek universe were done so out of simple economic necessity — the transporter was created because the budget of the original series in the 1960s did not allow for expensive shots of spaceships landing on planets.
In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode entitled "Starship Mine", the Enterprise docks at a space station to remove "baryon" particles, which supposedly build up on the hull of the spaceship during warp travel, necessitating periodic cleaning.
