About Scorpion

Biography

Scorpion is an undead hell spawned ninja spectre who travels through the realms of Mortal Kombat to seek respite for his soul by destroying those who killed him, his clan and his family. Although he sometimes joins the bad guys, only if they provide his means of being alive on Earth, Scorpion is not an evil character. However, he will not join the good warriors permanently, only sometimes assisting them. Scorpion has always been a loner. He has an unwavering tenacity and ferocity to achieve his goal of getting revenge, although he can be quite gullible at times (especially to the manipulations of Quan Chi). But, unlike other ninja, Scorpion does have a sense of honor. Except for the murder and his desire for vengeance, he retains no memories of his former life. Scorpion is depicted as a ninja clad in yellow and black. Unmasked, Scorpion's head is a (sometimes flaming) skull. Scorpion in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.

Scorpion's chronological first appearance is in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, where Quan Chi had hired him to find a map, in case Sub-Zero failed. At the time, Scorpion was an assassin for the Shirai Ryu, and his name was Hanzo Hasashi. The Shirai Ryu was a single clan out of the many connected clans through Japan known as the Ninja. The Shirai Ryu were started by a renegade Lin Kuei member named Takeda who seceded from them, and the Shirai Ryu was the very clan he started. This made the Shirai Ryu a fierce rival to the Lin Kuei. When the two met, they battled until Sub-Zero defeated and decapitated him. Scorpion returned to fight Sub-Zero in the Netherealm as a vengeful spectre, but Sub-Zero escaped him. The two met for the penultimate time on Shang Tsung's boat, where Scorpion told him he would kill him in the Mortal Kombat tournament, which he did. Scorpion followed Sub-Zero, apparently alive again, when Shao Kahn hosted Mortal Kombat in Outworld. It is unclear whether or not they met, but while watching one of Sub-Zero's battles, Scorpion witnessed this Sub-Zero sparing the life of his opponent. From there, he grew confused and did not fully understand why the Lin Kuei warrior had grown so merciful. He would later on learn that this Sub-Zero was not the same man who murdered him so many years ago and that it was actually his younger brother, sent as a replacement. As a result, he vowed to become his protector as his way of saying "sorry" for murdering his older brother. Shao Kahn. ...

When Shao Kahn invaded Earthrealm and unsuccessfully tried to conquer the Netherealm as well, Scorpion was set free. The emperor enlisted him in his extermination squads. However when Scorpion discovered that Sub-Zero was one of Earth's warriors, he turned on the Emperor. He took part in helping Liu Kang in the final showdown with Shao Kahn. When Earth reverted back to normal, so Scorpion was driven back to hell, only knowing that he will one day rise and walk the grounds of Earth once more. Liu Kang is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series, and from the first game up until the introduction of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, has been its main hero, being the only character to appear in every game of the series until Deadly Alliance (Sub-Zero has appeared...

During the events of Mortal Kombat Gold, Scorpion was periodically released again by Quan Chi. In exchange for life, Scorpion would fight Sub-Zero (Quan Chi had told Scorpion that Sub-Zero was the true murderer of his family and clan). He eagerly accepted, but was shocked to learn from his former nemesis that it had in fact been Quan Chi who had arranged for the killing of the Shirai Ryu and Scorpion's family. Enraged, Scorpion leapt at Quan Chi and the two landed in the Netherealm through a dimensional gateway. The history of the Shirai Ryu extends back to the Lin Kuei, in the early days of the Lin Kuei there was a Japanese Lin Kuei member named Takeda and he decided to defect from the Lin Kuei, this naturally marks him for death for his betrayal to the clan. ...

For the years that Quan Chi spent in the Netherealm, he would be chased, brutalized and tortured by Scorpion. Quan Chi had little chance of escape, as his powers would be weakened while he was in the Netherealm and Scorpion's power and strength increased while in that realm (note: Quan Chi, as Shinnok's second-in-command, had previously resided in the Netherealm. However, this was explained as a new region of the Netherealm where sorcerors lose power). Quan Chi had struck a deal with the Oni Drahmin and Moloch, who fought off Scorpion for him. When Quan Chi escaped the Netherealm though a portal, Scorpion followed him, but the volatile portal did not send him to the same place. He continued to hound Quan Chi in a hide-and-seek game for the years to come, until Drahmin and Moloch threw him into the soulnado, scattering his essence across the realms. While it was believed that Scorpion was torn apart by the souls in the Soulnado, he really wasn't. He actually managed to ascend up to the heavens where the soulnado emerged from and from there was he able to avoid death. From there, he would witness the Elder Gods, in whom he had never believed. From there onwards would he be changed from what he saw. He also witnessed the supposed death of Raiden and the dominance of the Dragon King being to unfold. The Elder Gods were aware of his presence and enhanced his mortal and special abilities. He was given a special task by the Elders to kill Onaga. Accepting this new mission, Scorpion emerged to Outworld once more in search of Onaga. Now it is the hell spawned spectre who is the true champion of the Elder Gods. Rayden. ...

Trivia

  • In various interviews, Ed Boon (the co-creator of Mortal Kombat) has openly admitted that his favourite character since the game's birth has always been Scorpion.
  • Throughout his life as a vengeful spectre, Scorpion has only killed one other character (that being Sub-Zero who came back as Noob Saibot); even this was never directly stated (somebody killed Sub-Zero, and Scorpion is the most likely candidate). He did not kill Quan Chi, although it was anticipated that Scorpion was going to take the life of the evil sorceror in the Netherealm after Mortal Kombat Gold.
  • Scorpion's most famous special move is the Spear, a spearhead attached to a rope. Scorpion throws the Spear at the victim, lodges it in him/her, then pulls the victim towards him, shouting "Get over here!" (or "Come here!") and leaving the victim open to attack.
  • Scorpion and Sub-Zero are mortal enemies. Ironically, they not only look similar but are also played by the same actor for most of the 2D games in the series.
  • Scorpion's yellow costume appearance is said to have mocked not only Sub-Zero but also the Lin Kuei as Takeda (who was a member of the Lin Kuei) developed Nijitsu which was a superior fighting style than what the Lin Kuei had. He quickly left the Lin Kuei and formed the Shirai Ryu clan, the Lin Kuei's main enemies.
  • Scorpion's signature phrase is, "Get Over Here!" In Mortal Kombat II, his quote would be changed to "Come Here!" Ironically in the first Mortal Kombat movie, he screams "Get Over Here!" when releasing the spear and screams "Come Here!" when retreving his spear back. For many reasons, Scorpion's "Get Over Here!" quote would return in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and onwards. He would sometimes alternate between the two lines. His "Come Here!" quote was used as a taunt in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
  • A variation of his quote was "Get Down Here!" which was said by Scorpion in the first Mortal Kombat movie (when Johnny Cage was standing on a structure of some sort). It did not however, appear in the game. As with his other signature phrases in both the games and the movie, he was voiced by Ed Boon. His only other line in the movie was "Welcome!"
  • Scorpion's signature move is the spear. In the first Mortal Kombat movie, it was changed to a serpent-like spear that could change course in the air. In Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (the sequel to the first Mortal Kombat movie) his spear would be changed again to a two headed serpent, far from the games' origin of the move.
  • In the comic books, Scorpion spear was a spiked ball attached to a chain. It was then changed again as a spike ball connected to a rope. Another permutation was added in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, where it resembled an axe-head attached to a chain (possibly to match his Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 hand-axe weapon).
  • Dan Forden (who does the sounds and music for Midway's games, especially in the Mortal Kombat series) is the man responsible for the "Toasty" callings-in relation to Scorpion. This originated in Mortal Kombat II, in which a special input allowed Scorpion's flame skull fatality to be performed anywhere, the message "Toasty!" would then be shown. In Scorpion's flame skull fatality in Mortal Kombat 4, Dan Forden screams out "Toasty! 3D!!" in reference to Scorpion's fatality being incorporated in full 3D. These are often misinterpreted due to the high pitch and sing-songy inflection, but is fairly clear if known beforehand.
  • In Mortal Kombat 4/Gold, his signature fatality was also used as a special move during battle, simply called "Flame Breath." This would later on be transfered to both Sonya and Shang Tsung as they had special moves that were variations of their fatalities in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Sonya's "Kiss of Death" move was a variation of her Fatality in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and Shang Tsung's "Soul Steal" move was a variation to his signature fatalities in the Mortal Kombat series). However, in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Scorpion has no such move or fatality. His flaming skull remains as an alternate costume (though the fire is only an effect, irrelevant to gameplay). In Mortal Kombat: Deception, he does not appear maskless at any time.
  • Scorpion has increasingly been promoted by Midway as the series' mascot. Although his popularity has declined among fans, he is arguably still one of the most popular characters of the series.
