Scott Sterling (March 2, 1962–August 27, 1987), better known by his stage nameScott La Rock, was the original DJ for the hip hop group Boogie Down Productions. Sterling, a social worker, met KRS-One in 1986 at a homeless shelter where KRS was staying. In Sterling's spare time, he DJed at local functions. Together with MCs KRS-One and D-Nice, he formed the Boogie Down Productions crew. Their debut album, Criminal Minded was an instant hit and is considered a classic and masterpiece of the genre. La Rock was shot to death in 1987 while attempting to break up a fight involving BDP colleague D-Nice. Though it might have meant the end of BDP, the group continued without him.
