Encyclopedia > Scottish Football League Division Three

The Scottish Football League Third Division is the third highest division of the Scottish Football League and the fourth highest overall in the Scottish football league system.


The division contains ten teams, and each year the top two teams are promoted to the Second Division. There is no relegation from the league. The teams play each other four times, with three points for a victory and one point each for a drawn game.

The league was formed in the 1890s to provide the growing number of football clubs in the country with a more consistent fixture list.
The league proved to be highly successful, and in 1893 a Second Division was formed by the inclusion of a number of clubs previously in the Scottish Football Alliance.
Scottish club Gretna, who had previously played in the English UniBond League, were admitted in 2002 to replace the defunct Airdrieonians.

The Scottish League Cup was a continuation of a wartime tournament.
Fife sides in general found the League Cup to be an exciting competition with both Raith Rovers and Dunfermline reaching the Final in the early years and Cowdenbeath's record attendance is for a League Cup tie against Rangers.
The end of this era saw some of the finest football ever played in the competition as Rangers and Aberdeen faced each other for three seasons running, Rangers winning on penalties after a 3-3 draw, winning again, this time 3-2 before the Dons claimed revenge in 1989-90 with a 2-1 win in extra time.
