Encyclopedia > Scottish Football League Premier Division

The Scottish Football League Premier Division was, from the mid-1970s until 1998, the top division of the Scottish Football League and the entire Scottish football league system. It lay above the Scottish Football League First, Second and Third divisions.


Before the start of the 1998-1999 season, the clubs of the Premier Division resigned en masse to form the Scottish Premier League, following the example of English clubs who formed the FA Premier League in 1992. The Scottish Football League did not reform the Premier Division, instead leaving the league with just the First, Second and Third divisions.

The league was formed in the 1890s to provide the growing number of football clubs in the country with a more consistent fixture list.
The league proved to be highly successful, and in 1893 a Second Division was formed by the inclusion of a number of clubs previously in the Scottish Football Alliance.
Scottish club Gretna, who had previously played in the English UniBond League, were admitted in 2002 to replace the defunct Airdrieonians.
