National Level

Area Level

The country is divided geographically into six areas which are Northern (also including Northern Ireland), North West, Eastern, South West, Southern and London. Each of these areas has its own headquarters and an Area Officer (AO) who is a Royal Navy Commander or, occasionally, a Royal Marine Lieutenant Colonel. Each area also has a Deputy Area Officer (DAO), usually a retired Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander, and Area Warrant Officer (AWO) who assist the AO.

District Level

Each area is further subdivided into districts of between 5 and 12 units. In charge of each district is a District Officer (DO) who is normally a Sea Cadet Lieutenant Commander or Major.

Activities

There are many activities for cadets to take part in, including offshore power and sailing, powerboating, windsurfing and dingy sailing. Non-waterbourne activities include drill (marching), physical training, cooking, comms, first aid and engineering to name but a few.

The higlight of any young persons cadet career is probably going on a national course. Usually held on a Royal Navy base, they learn skills such as leadership, teamwork and other things useful in the outside world. For those on specialist qualification courses, they could be powerboating in Scotland, cooking in Preston or firefighting in Cornwall to name but a few activities. Courses are held throughout the year and are always a great place to meet new people and enjoy yourself.

Young people between the ages of 12 and 18 can join the SCC, although some units also have a Junior Cadet Section which is for cadets aged between 10 and 12. Other units also have a Marine Cadet Detatchment (which bases itself on the Royal Marines as opposed to the Royal Navy) for young people between the ages of 13 and 18. At present not all marine detatchments accept female marine cadets because of the lack of female marine cadet staff, however every unit accepts female sea cadets.
