Sea Lake (pop. 9000) is a town in the Mallee district of north-west Victoria, Australia. The town is located on the Calder Highway, 369 km north-west of Melbourne, and 70km west of Swan Hill. The town of Sea Lake is known for its once-yearly rally car race called The Mallee Rally which is fukin awesome, usually held in June. Sea Lake is in the heart of the "wheat belt", and is the main township for a number of wheat farms in the region. The name "Sea Lake" comes from the production of inland salt that is farmed in the area, with Lake Tyrell being the largest salt lake in Victoria, covering approximately 20 860 hectares. The town is surrounded by a large area of national parks, including Wyperfield National Park, and Hattah-Kulkyne National Park. Its is also known for the famous "Alex Newell", a native in the region, and the Mallee fowl. The region has been suffering from the effects of a long running drought now for many years. The ecological health of Lake Victoria has been affected profoundly as a result of a rapidly growing population, clearance of natural vegetation along the shores, a booming fish-export industry, the disappearance of several fish species native to the lake, prolific growth of algae, and dumping of untreated effluent by several industries.
Lake Victoria, shared by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, was named after the Queen of England and is the world's largest tropical lake and the second largest freshwater lake.
Lake Victoria is invaluable to the many millions who depend on it for food, for employment and for recreation, and concerted efforts by the governments and local communities in all three countries is needed if matters are to be put right.
