Lemass was first elected as a TD in 1924 and was elected at each election until his retirement in 1969.
On 23 June 1959 Seán Lemass was appointed Taoiseach on the nomination of the Dáil.
Sean Lemass remains one of the most highly regarded of Irish Taoisigh, being described even by later Fine Gael Taoisigh Garret FitzGerald and John Bruton as the best holder of the office, and the man whose cabinet leadership style they wished to follow.
