In an organised sports league, a season is the portion of one year in which regulated games of the sport are in session. For example, in Major League Baseball, one season lasts approximately from April to September; in the National Hockey League, it is from October until June. A calendar year can be broken up into a few distinct "seasons" for any given sport. Pre-season

Most team sports have a period of training and exhibition games prior to the official start of the season. The games' results have no meaning for the upcoming season. but serve as a way to prepare the players and the team. Regular season

The term regular season is used primarily in North American sports. A regular season comprises a set number of games in a sport before a playoff, which determines a champion.
