Secondo Pia was born in 1855 to a well-todo family in the Piedmont region of Italy.
Pia received several objections to this, but was finally granted permission to test this new technology on the Shroud.
However, what Pia saw in his developing pan, and the sensation he felt when he first observed it, was so overwhelming that it would stay with him for the rest of his life.
