Sega Super GT (titled Scud Race in Europe and Japan) is an arcade racing game released by Sega in 1996 in what turned out to be a "semi-sequel" to Daytona USA. It is one of the first games to be featured on the Sega Model 3 Hardware and supported phenomenal graphics for a video game made in 1996 running at 60 frames per second and rendering 1 million polygons per second. Super GT cabinets come in either Twin or Deluxe cabinets, which can be linked together for up to four players. The game was modelled after the racing group known as the BPR Organisation (which is now part of FIA.) The four cars featured in this game had paint jobs that resembled the actual cars that raced in the 1996 BPR Racing Season. The game features four different courses of varying difficulty, though two are Beginner level (with the difference being day and night time.) And just like Daytona USA, an arcade operator can put the game in Grand Prix or Endurance Mode for longer races, which are great for tournament purposes. Many consider this game to be one of the best racing games of all time, but there has never been a console release, although there was a tech demo of this game for the Dreamcast back in the late 90's (Which may have turned into the Sega GT series.) Daytona USA Sequel?
After the great success of Daytona USA, fans (especially in Japan) wanted a sequel to the game. Sega later had an arcade test game known as "Supercar," but this then evolved into Scud Race/Super GT. The most notable similarities include the HUD display with most features in the same positons on sceen, and the handling style of the game. Sega released the true sequel, Daytona USA 2 in 1998. Scud Race Plus Sega also created "Scud Race Plus" as an update to the game in 1997. This version allowed players to play one of the four courses in reverse, and also added the bizarre "Super-Beginner" track, which was a straight-up oval and raced as a bus or other wacky vehicles. There was no American release of Scud Race Plus. Apparently, Sega never marketed this version outside of Japan, but it is possible to switch the country to "USA" and get "Sega Super GT Plus" which features everything from Scud Race Plus, but in the American format. 1997 (MCMXCVII) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar. ...

Screenshots of this game in flyers depict early versions of this game, the main difference being the font used for the lap numbers in the top left corner, and that the all of the courses originally had 4 or 5 laps (also, when the clock went under ten seconds during the race, it read "09", "08", "07", etc., but in the game itself (at least in North America), it reads "9", "8", "7", etc.) A bug in the position indicator does not change the lettering of "TH." For example, third place reads "3th."
