The Segura River is an unpredictable river which occasionally floods. In the twentieth century significant flooding occurred in 1946, 1948, 1973 and 1982. Due to the change in global climate and a permanent state of severe drought in southern Spain, this no longer seems to be a concern. The alluvial plain is called the "Vega del Segura" which is a very productive agricultural region growing a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The Segura is, unfortunately, one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. Efforts have been made to clean it up, however, with varying and temporary levels of success.
