In Egyptian mythology, Serket ("she who causes the throat to breathe") was a scorpion-goddess, patron of pharaohs, dead souls and canopic jars. She protected people against the poisonous bites and stings of animals, including snakes and scorpions.
Serket was also the name (sometimes written as "Scorpion" or "King Scorpion") of a Predynastic king of Upper Egypt, who ruled from about 3150 to 3125 BC.
It should be noted that Serket was not the basis for the 2002 movie The Scorpion King, which is entirely fictionalised.
