New format of the license plates was announced in July 2006, and was expected to be gradually applied from January 2007. [1] The dimensions will be 520x120 mm, the code format will be two-letter region code, followed by a 3-digit numeric and a 2-letter alpha code (e.g. BG 123 AA). A blue field will be placed along the left place edge, as in European Union countries, and the font used (FE-Schrift) will be the same as for German license plates.
