He is a gambler who owns an airship, the Blackjack. "A blackjack-playing, world-traveling, casino-dwelling free spirit..." Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow. The player first hears of Setzer in Owzer's house in Jidoor. He has said he will abduct Maria during an opera. The player characters head to the opera house, where the use Celes as a decoy and thereby gain access to his airship when she is abducted instead of Maria. Setzer agrees to help out the player characters after losing a coin toss to Celes. (She had used a double-headed coin. Setzer learns this, but he loves their tactics and helps them anyway.) He takes them to the Southern Continent, and later he helps them flee, fighting his first battle with the party against the cranes. When the World of Balance changes into the World of Ruin, the Blackjack is torn apart in the cataclysm. Setzer winds up in Kohlingen. When Celes, Edgar, and possibly Sabin encounter him, he is hesitant to rejoin them, but is eventually convinced. He directs them to Daryl's tomb, where they acquire the Falcon, the only remaining airship in the world. Setzer was born on February 8th, making him an Aquarius. He likes duels, and dislikes people who are easily scared.
Slot
Setzer's initial special command Slot allows him to try his hand at a slot machine during battle, which can result in numerous outcomes: - 7-Flush (three 7's)
kills all enemies - Joker Doom (7-7-Bar)
kills all enemies and the party - Magicite (three bars)
summons a random esper - Sun Flare (three birds)
summons Bahamut - H-bomb (three airships)
attacks all enemies - Chocobop (three chocobos)
attacks the enemies not in the air - Flash (three diamonds)
attacks all enemies - Lagomorph (other combination)
slightly recovers HP and heals status effects Many of these combinations are often locked out so that the player cannot get them even with perfect timing, but enterprising players have determined how to beat the lock by manipulating the game's random number generator. Equipping the Coin Toss replaces the Slot command with GP Rain, which allows the party to spend money to damage the enemies.
