A sexual predator is not necessarily a criminal. An adult male can cruise a bar looking for consensual sex from an adult female and be considered a sexual predator. He is looking for prey (metaphorically). In this case, no crime will be committed.


Contrary to the name "Predator" they are not always violent persons, sometimes it may just be desperation, sadness or loneliness which causes them to go out looking for sex. Even so they can be classed as "predators." This type of emotionally backed search for sex can often lead to "pity sex" or "seduction." (Seduction more often occurs in the case of a woman searching for someone to have sex with.)


Some U.S. states have a special status for criminals designated as sexually violent predators, which allows these offenders to be held in prison after their sentence is complete if they are considered to be a risk to the public.
