A geographical political division in Iran. A shahrestan is an area inside an ostan (Geography) and consists of a city as centre, few bakhsh and many villages around them. Fars Province with 23 shahrestan has the highest number of shahrestan while Semnan and South Khorasan each have only 4 shahrestan. Iran had 324 shahrestan in 2005. Each shahrestan has a governmental office known as Farmandari which coordinate different events and governmental offices there. Farmandar or the head of Farmandari is the governor o shahrestan which is the highest governmental authority in a particular shahrestan.
