Overseas Banks Taking Stakes (409 words)
With a total of 18 per cent of the company owned by overseas financial institutions, the Bank of Shanghai is the first bank on the mainland to absorb equity investment from overseas banks.
The Bank of Shanghai was established in China's financial hub in 1995 through a merger of urban credit cooperatives in the city.
Earlier, the Shanghai-based Bank of Communications, the nation's largest shareholding commercial bank, said it was planning to sell 15 percent of its assets to two or three foreign financial giants to strengthen its position in the market.

First established in Shanghai in 1915 with the aspiration of “service to society, support for industry, and prosperity to enhance international trade”, Shanghai Commercial and Savings Bank, Ltd. (SCSB) is today one of the largest privately held banks in Taiwan.
SCSB is the only Taiwanese bank with a full Greater China network, and is the first bank in Taiwan to receive approval in 2002 from the government to conduct direct remittances with financial institutions in China.
The bank was also the first to issue industry-specific loans such as “agricultural loans” and “salt industry loans” as well as one of the first banks to consolidate its teller services into a one-stop shop for customers in the 1930s.
