Shanks' mare (297 words)
Shanks' (or shanks's) mare (or nag or pony) derives from the name of the lower part of the leg between the knee and ankle - the shank, nowadays more often known as the shin-bone or tibia.
This was alluded to in the early form of this term - shank's nag.
It is sometimes capitalized as 'Shank's pony' as some reports claim it to have derived from an individual called Shanks, or from the Shanks and Company Ltd. (formed in 1853 and now absorbed into Armitage Shanks), who previously manufactured lawn-mowing machines.
Absolute Anime / One Piece / Shanks (478 words)
Shanks refused to take Luffy as one of his pirate crew, because he knew that Luffy couldn't swim very well.
Shanks offered their leader a clean, unopened bottle, only to have it smashed on his head.
As his crew dealt with the bandits, the bandit leader took Luffy to the coast and threw him in the water as a Seaking (a monstrous Moray-like creature) ate the bandit and was about to do the same to Luffy.
